Mokulele Airlines will continue free shipments to Kapalua for donated supplies to benefit residents of the deadly wildfire through Sept. 15.
Mokulele said Monday that it has collected and shipped more than 40,000 pounds of supplies since resuming daily service flights to Kapalua on Aug. 11. It is the only airline with scheduled service to Kapalua Airport. Daily flights on this route are intended for local residents, family members providing assistance, essential service providers and emergency personnel, the airline said.
Mokulele has been collecting donated supplies at its terminals on Hawaii island, Lanai and Molokai for immediate shipment to Kahului since Aug. 9 and at its terminal in Honolulu for direct shipment to Kapalua since Aug. 11.
Accepted donations include nonperishable food items, clothing, slippers, blankets, personal hygiene supplies, baby formula, diapers, disposable plates, plasticware, wet wipes and other similar items. For keiki, items like small toys, games, playing cards, stuffed animals, coloring books and crayons are suggested. All items must be collected prior to 4 p.m. daily. Packaging in multiple smaller boxes is better than one large box for space considerations.
“The aviation community has really teamed together to help the people of Lahaina,” Richard Schuman, executive vice president of Pacific operations for Mokulele and Southern Airways, said in a news release Monday. “The scheduled service airlines, cargo carriers, helicopter tour providers and even private aircraft owners have all communicated constantly to provide a coordinated relief effort. If we receive a donation that is too large for us to ship, with one phone call, we can get those supplies moving.”
Mokulele’s daily scheduled flights remain largely unaffected by the relief effort. Extra flights between Kahului and Lanai are added on an as-needed basis while the ferry service is reduced. Cargo-only flights can be added if donated items cannot be shipped on scheduled flights.
Displaced residents from the impacted areas wishing to relocate to Molokai or Lanai are asked to contact any Mokulele employee or the customer service center to arrange for complimentary transportation.
